UK Poppy Enthusiasts Wanted! |
| August 10, 2001
|
Robin Eveleigh, who writes for the British counter-culture magazine Bizarre, is writing an article on Poppies and is looking for some folks to talk to in the UK.
Rob says: "I'm trying to work up a piece for a magazine about suburban poppy growers and am looking for some leads. What I would really like to do is speak to some UK growers, or seed dealers."
He's not looking to do some torrid expose or anything, so no worries for you paranoid folks. In fact, if his article is anything like what I've seen in past issues, then I'm sure it'll be a very sympathetic (and highly entertaining) piece.
So, if you're into poppies and live in the UK, you can contact Rob at robin@hooknews.freeserve.co.uk to get your voice heard.

Law review would be opiate for Tasmania |
| August 10, 2001
|
This is an older article, but we're putting it up anyhow simply because it makes for an interesting read. Back in 2000, about fifteen hundered farmers licensed by the Tasmanian Government to grow poppies represented a potential new order. With the exception of the USA, they supplied the rest of the world's pharmaceutical industry with half its needs. They were pressing hard for a relaxation of the American "80-20 rule", which ensures the world's biggest drug industry buys most of its opium requirements from India and Turkey.

OxyContin Making 'Smart Pill' |
| August 8, 2001
|
The maker of OxyContin says that it has come up with blueprints for a ``smart pill'' that would be tougher to abuse. The new painkiller, which has yet to be named and would not be available for at least three years, would destroy its own narcotic ingredients if crushed into a powder and snorted or injected.

Roundup works -- but too well? |
| August 6, 2001
|
Odorless and apparently only slightly toxic, you can buy it for your back yard at any large supermarket. So why is its use kicking up such a stink in Colombia?

Lebanon Returns to Opium Cultivation |
| July 31, 2001
|
When one country stops, another is always out there waiting in the shadows to pick up the slack. With the recent ban on Opium Poppy Cultivation in Afghanistan considered a "success", Lebanon has stepped up to fill the gap.
