US and EU Anti-Opium Efforts Ineffective |
| December 1, 2002
|
US and European policies to stem the flow of opium from central Asia are "limited in scope, funding, and imagination", according to the International Crisis Group (ICG). A private lobby group led by the former president of Finland, the ICG slammed US/EU anti-drug efforts as doing more harm than good.

| November 26, 2002
|
For various reasons, new user registration was disabled in the forums some time ago. A lot of visitors have been asking if we will be re-opening the forums to new users at some point, and the answer is yes. Rural Afghan Farmers Starting to Obey Poppy Ban |
| November 25, 2002
|
Some Afghan farmers this year are not planting poppies -- they say they fear jail because of a new government ban on poppy growing. Their fear could be a first sign that Afghans outside the capital, Kabul, are following the writ of law recently laid down by Prime Minister Hamid Karzai.

| November 13, 2002
|

Remembering the Fallen |
| November 11, 2002
|
On November 11th, we both mourn and celebrate the sacrifices of those who went forth and fought in the major wars of the 20th century. Veterans Day in the United States, Rememberance Day in Canada and Armistace Day in England all fall on the 11th of November, marking the anniversary of the end of the first World War. The poppy has long been the symbol of the brave soldiers who fought and died for freedom from tyranny. In honour of their sacrifices, poppies.org will observe a virtual moment of silence, with the somni-forum going off-line at 11am on November 11th. For more information on the traditional moment of silence in Canada, click here.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

| November 7, 2002
|
Well, the move is finished and we're now on the new server. Things have gone fairly smooth for the most part, but expect to see some bugs here and there while we're still in transition.
Cheers,

| October 31, 2002

Four days after Russian forces used anesthetic gas to end a hostage standoff by Chechen rebels, Russia's top health official identified the main component of the gas blamed for the deaths of 117 hostages -- an opiate-based narcotic 100 times more powerful than morphine.
