Elderly Woman Gets 149 Years for Opium Dealing |

A 91 year-old woman has been sentenced to 149 years in prison in Vietnam for dealing Opium. Pham Thi Ngoc, 91, had eight previous convictions for selling the substance.
On hearing her sentence, Ngoc, from Thai Binh, laughed and made fun of the judge. She is currently being cared for by six other inmates after refusing to eat and threatening suicide.

The CBC News has done an interesting piece relating to the upcoming release of the UNDCP report on Drug Trends (See Previous Story). According to the CBC, the Taliban's Poppy-Growing ban has resulted in a total erradication of the Opium Poppy from Afghanistan.

U.N. Publishes 2001 Global Drug Trends Report |

The United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP) has released its annual global report on illicit drug trends. The report assesses supply and demand for a variety of illegal drugs, and analyzes shifting patterns in usage, distribution and cultivation.
This year's report highlighted a finding that the ban on opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has resulted in a 19 percent reduction for the 2000-2001 growing season, according to an ODCCP press release.
