Elderly Woman Gets 149 Years for Opium Dealing

A 91 year-old woman has been sentenced to 149 years in prison in Vietnam for dealing Opium. Pham Thi Ngoc, 91, had eight previous convictions for selling the substance.

On hearing her sentence, Ngoc, from Thai Binh, laughed and made fun of the judge. She is currently being cared for by six other inmates after refusing to eat and threatening suicide.

Pham Thi Ngoc was jailed for selling opium. She had eight previous convictions for drug-dealing.

Ngoc was first jailed for selling opium in 1997 but the court suspended the sentence because of her advanced age, reports said.

A provincial official said: "She has abused the humane policies of the state. She is so brazen in her activities she has even offered drugs to uniformed police."

On hearing her sentence, Ngoc, from Thai Binh, laughed and made fun of the judge.

State-controlled media are reporting the woman is being cared for by six other inmates after throwing tantrums, refusing to eat and threatening suicide.
